Downloading many engraving files?

I am a PhD student in music theory. For an academic project, I would like to download many scores that have mxl or musescore formats available. Thus I have a number of questions:

1. is there any accepted automated or similar way of downloading many files? I can imagine than in general you don't want people ripping the entire site etc. But perhaps academic use cases might represent an acceptable reason to download many files?
2. is there a way of using the API to find scores with engraving files available? As far as I can tell the works API linked at https://imslp.org/wiki/IMSLP:API does not specify what file formats are available for each score, so to do that in an automated way I would need to write a crawler to visit each page.

Thanks for your help. I have been an avid user and paying member of IMSLP for many years. It is my favorite website and I don't wish to use it in a way that contradicts its intended usage.
