Re: Duties/Powers of Musical Executor

Thank you, Philip - really helpful as always. I'm holding off doing anything at the moment while waiting for a "no" (sorry, I mean "decision") from the latest publisher on my list. But everything you suggest will be useful if/when the time comes to post stuff here. In any case, e...

Duties/Powers of Musical Executor

Dear all, Some advice would be really helpful here: three years ago I was appointed Musical Executor to my friend Mark Edgley Smith (1955-2008), who left behind a small but interesting body of unpublished music, mainly for instrumental ensembles and vocal groups. I've been trying, off and on, to int...

Re: Bach in translation

It works! Now maybe one day I'll do something about the descriptions - "Full Score" for the BGA edition and "Vocal Score" for the Novello should perhaps be the other way round, since the Novello also includes a keyboard realisation, whereas the BGA is just the vocal parts. But it...

Re: Bach in translation

And now that it is posted, it's quite difficult to find by its English title. Entering Jesu, Priceless Treasure into the Search box and hitting "Search" returns nothing - at which point I suspect that some searchers will give up. Hitting "Go", it's true, returns a page text match...

Re: Bach in translation

Thanks, both. Yes, I'd checked the style guide, and was aware of the multi-lingual operas. I felt this one was slightly different because of English-speaking choirmasters who might not be aware that the piece was the same as Jesu meine Freude (which is the title under which it will appear on the Rec...

Bach in translation

All, Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I've had a look around the site and not found another situation quite like it. I've done a scan of the old Novello edition of Bach's "Jesu, Priceless Treasure" ( = Jesu meine Freude , BWV.227). I'm sure this is PD - there's no copyright notice...

Elgar - Give unto the Lord, Op.74

Does anyone have access to the full score? (I have a friend who specifically needs the harp part, but the whole thing would be even better.)

Thanks to all,

DF

Re: Help Identifying Music

The previous track, which the listing claims as the third movement of Tchaikovsky 6, isn't that either. It could very well be by Mendelssohn (not his "Military Overture", though, as he didn't write one - a Trumpet Overture, op.101, but it's not that.) Bit more military precision needed in ...

Re: easy short pieces for piano

Literally "Piano Music for Small and Big", usually translated as "for Young and Old". As one of the latter I can promise that they are both charming and rewarding.

Re: easy short pieces for piano

It's a pity that the main site doesn't currently have Nielsen's Klavermusik for smaa og store - these are perhaps slightly above the level of the complete beginner, but good to work on. There are 25 pieces in all the keys (2 in G major), and all lie within a 5-finger range. I have the edition publis...

Re: Favorite Climaxes

Well, Leonin's Viderunt omnes reaches a superb climax at a point 5 maximae before the second plainsong section... OK, I'm bluffing. But shame on both of us, Philip, for not having mentioned the end of the Judex movement in Brian's Gothic Symphony, or the big Maestoso about 5 minutes into no.16. DF

Re: Favorite Climaxes

What an interesting topic. Very Romantic things, climaxes, aren't they? But a good "early music" one for me comes towards the end of Byrd's Quadran Pavan and Galliard (Fitzwilliam Virginal Book vol.2 p.114) where, having brought us through a huge 15-minute structure, he can finally let rip...

Nielsen Commotio

I've just acquired a score of Nielsen's Commotio for organ and was wondering about the copyright situation. The footer to the first page of music says "Copyright 1932 by Sanfundet til Udgivelse af dansk Musik, København". The cover, however, says "1954 - 2. Oplag" (i.e. 2nd impre...
