Re: Permission to make an annoucement on the Forum
This sounds like an interesting idea. Perhaps some of our editors who've posted items here might be interested in making the performance material available in this way. One question I have (being a contributor to the cabal, etc.) would be: Do the editors of these prospective new editions get to hav...

Re: Permission to make an annoucement on the Forum
Many thanks for the quick reply, Philip. For the record, this post was the first mention anywhere of this new plan for Noteworthy Musical Editions, (i.e. to rent newly typeset parts for PD scores with no parts.) And no, I wasn't aware of the existence of Project Petrucci LLC -- but I will contact it...

Permission to make an annoucement on the Forum
I would like to make an announcement on IMSLP's forum. Since this announcement is related to a commercial venture, I would like in this post to describe in general terms what the announcement will be about about. I ask the powers-that-be at IMSLP whether such an announcement would be appropriate on ...

Works by Luigi Hugues
Luigi Hugues was a remarkable 19th C. Italian figure. He was a major flute soloist, flute teacher and prolific composer of Romantic works for the flute (including several concertos.) He was also a world-renowned geographer with an extraordinary number of books and articles on the subject. Only one o...

Re: Uploading non-PD scores to a server where they are PD
For the second time in a week, I am confused by the term "threshold of originality." Who determines where this threshhold begins? -- in the US, for example. On what standards in law is this "threshhold of originality" based, specifically with respect to music? Do these standards ...

Some suggestions for improvements on IMSLP
Here are several suggestions I offer to make the IMSLP website even more useful. 1. Lists of composers' names (with links to each composer's list of compositions) should also contain each composer's dates. I think this additional information would aid users immeasurably while browsing lists of compo...

Re: Uploading non-PD scores to a server where they are PD
Fascinating reading, this fiery thread. The subject of copyrights on typesetting were touched upon -- something I was unaware of. Would someone please explain what copyrights exist on typesetting in the 3 regimes (terms, conditions, etc.)? Or point me to a link which deals with the topic.

Many thanks, Carolus, for a penetrating analysis of what is, evidently, a significant copyright issue.

Copyrightable editions of PD works (in US.)
IMSLP now hosts scans of many musical manuscripts -- from the 19th C. and earlier. A considerable number of them have never before been published -- that is, as printed music on paper -- or otherwise copyrighted. In the US, Editio Princeps ended at the end of 2002. Thus, from 2003-on, all unpublishe...

Cornet solos with orchestra/band/piano
Richard I. Schwatz has published on the web a catalog of more than 1000 solos for cornet -- with accompaniments for orchestra, or for band, or for piano -- beginning with 14 solos by the instrument's greatest master: Jean-Baptiste Arban. file:///D:/SCANNED%20MUSIC%20A-L/~DOCS/Solos%20for%20the%20Cor...

Stefano Ligoratti

Re: IMSLP under attack by Music Publishers Association (UK)
Though no lawyer I, the clearcut facts in this case make me wonder whether IMSLP should seek a declaratory judgment in a US or Canadian Court -- should the same issue ever re-emerge, either with the British MPA or some other foreign complainant. I have read that the recipient of a Cease and Desist l...

Schubert-Krenek; Piano Sonata in C major, D. 840 Reliquie
IMSLP has neither Schubert's original score nor any of several completions of this important work. The Krenek completion may be PD. Schubert-Krenek; Piano Sonata in C major, D. 840 Reliquie from Wikipedia: Ernst Krenek wrote his completion at the request of his friend, the pianist and composer Eduar...

Re: Online Collection of Milan Conservatorio di musica
Hi Generoso Once again, many thanks to you for the uploads from the Milan Conservatory -- especially the Bottesini Andante sostenuto (B. is a special interest of mine.) If you plan on downloading any more pieces from the website, I suggest you try my tip concerning the Snip Tool in Windows 7 (that i...

Re: Online Collection of Milan Conservatorio di musica
I access the Website of the Conservatorio di Milano at http://www.consmilano.it/index.php?id=biblioteca_digitale The catalog of musical scores can be found at http://www.consmilano.it/index.php?id=379 The pages of all scores have been scanned as separate images, not as continuous works. As I mention...
