The one big advantage of using Lilypond though, is that its output is a PDF file, which can be opened with Acrobat Reader, which is free. However, if you plan to alter the music (transcription), you would need to edit the original input file (the one which ends with a .ly extension), which can be di...

If I'm not mistaken, Dover also replaces the original typeface of headings of works with English translation, although to me the font looks good.

Not me. I have the soundtracks to Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII and IX and I think they're all wonderful. The reason I don't have the soundtracks to the other Final Fantasy series is because I haven't played that particular series before. I believe that one has to play and complete the game to really ...

I guess is that the only definitive way to determine if the 1984 edition has significant alterations for it to satisfy the threshold of originality would be to compare the 1903 and 1984 scores side by side.

Carolus, since Zemlinsky died in 1942, would the work be PD in Canada, assuming that the 1984 edition by UE does not meet the threshold of originality needed to secure copyright protection for the work?

Yes, the file size increases if the resolution is higher, even with CCITT 4 compression. So a file size of 100-200kb for a monochrome 600dpi (A4 size) after CCITT 4 compression is acceptable.

To jsnfmn,
Dover also publishes two of Rimsky-Korsakov's most famous pieces: Sheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol. If it's his rarer works like operas you're looking for, you can try Kalmus or Eulenburg.

Not necessarily. If the editions of the said works were edited by editors who are still alive or died less than 50 years ago then the works would not be PD in Canada.

Hi, there are many music engraving softwares out there like Finale, Encore, Sibelius etc. Maybe you can try to download a free trial version and see if you can put the music into a viewable format. It's easier to recognize music this way (at least for me).

As an alternative, you can try using download managers like Flashget. Even if you get disconnected from the Internet while a file is being downloaded, the manager will usually complete the download for you.

If you use Photoshop or Acrobat to edit the PDF images, the addition of layers will increase the file size as well. You would need to use the "flatten layer" option or something like that to maintain the file size (or at least close to it) of the PDFs. This is of course, assuming that the ...

I do personally think that Lilypond's computer engraving is the closest we've got to matching traditional hand engraving of music scores.

As a music student, I too find full orchestral scores more useful than vocal scores as I would be able to study the orchestration. I understand the rational of vocal scores as they are less heavier, less bulkier and less page turns which are more suitable for the soloists and the piano player.
