It depends. Works by Stravinsky and Shostakovich which are published before 1923 are PD in the United States.

Hi, Sheet Music Plus does have the work you are looking for, assuming that what you are looking for is the Piano Quintet in F minor. It includes both the full score and parts: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_detail.html?item=979532&cart=3426625050321017&cm_re=289.1.4-_-Results+Item-_...

Personally, the only work that combines both elements of classical (opera) and pop that appeals to me is The Phantom of the Opera. Feel free to comment.

I've been removing all the logos. It seems like a pretty dirty trick to sell PD music, and say on the CD that "by opening these files you agree not to remove the logos or copy them." They also claim to have added "many editorial additions," but I've compared with the original B&...

Like Carolus said, if the edition is an Urtext or critical edition that was published in Germany in 1959, it would enjoy a copyright protection of 25 years. Thus, the work would enter the public domain in 1984. Whether or not the editor has passed away by that time does not matter.

Also, if they print some sort of header or footer on each page of the score and it is not removed, then of course they would recognize them easily.

Ah, you mean its use in 2001: A Space Odyssey? Funny, I seem to recall a segment in Sesame Street using the opening of Also Sprach Zarathustra as well when I was a kid.

Carolus, does this mean if a work is considered urtext or critical edition, it can only enjoy a copyright protection of 25 years in Germany, even if the editor is still alive today?

Isn't the slow movement of Mozart's piano concerto no. 21 in C major among the best known soundtrack because of its use in Elvira Madigan? I've never seen the movie so I can't really comment.

Feldmahler, is this "scanned by unknown" problem just the tip of the iceberg? IMSLP has scores where the "scanned by" name is the name of the website the scores were taken from. Examples are bh2000.net and the Variations music score project site. I would agree that these names ar...

And although a few of his works that were published before 1923 maybe PD in the US, the fact that IMSLP is hosted in Canada makes these works impossible to be uploaded to IMSLP (the Canadian server at least) as well.

I feel that the line between classical and pop music is being blurred, with more classically trained musicians playing classical music in a pop style.
