Tabulatura Nova, SSWV 102-158 (Scheidt, Samuel)

I could not decipher all of the edits on this page, but items 2.2.4, 2.2.5, and 2.2.6 are listed as being for 4 viols :o and they really are for 2 viols.

Nonexistant page

On page "O, yes! Has any found a lad? (Tomkins, Thomas)"
When I try to add a file to this page I receive an alert "Fatal Error: Nonexistant page"
The page display looks normal, and reviewing the edit page, I don't see any errors. :?

Re: Inclusion of MIDI files

MIDI files are computer files which generate instructions to an instrument on how to play the piece. They tell when to start a note, when to stop it, what dynamics to use for that note, etc. The sound quality depends entirely on what instrument the are used to control: a computer, an electronic keyb...

Help!

I am having great difficulty with transferring my files from wIMA to IMSLP because administrators begin changing my files before I have finished entering them. Practically all of them require editing after initial entry because the WIMA transfer form does not have space for all of the inform...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Other possible (minor to be sure) considerations are that 'viol' is a shorter and thus more convenient term. Longer, multi-word names tend to be shortened by using only one of the words. To those familiar with the subject, a non-misleading one will be chosen, e.g. 'gamba' ; but those less familiar w...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Is this another vote? The ' Viola da Gamba Society' (of Great Britain) publishes the most comprehensive index of music for the instrument in question that I know of. Their name for the index (from their web site) is: "Thematic Index of music for viols". Let's face it, the two names have be...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

I was just recalling some of my early trials of the category walker and the search boxes using the term 'viol' when I was startled to find almost all of the references were to the viola and violin with the user sometimes being a violist--scarcely what I was looking for. :(

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

This still leaves the question of the name and categorization of the player. The modern viola player is called a violist, and we are not going to be able to change that. The common term among players of viols today is 'gambist', and not emphasizing its origin, it is a unique name for the play...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Just to add some dissenting voice, for option 2: Shouldn't the names spelled out via the categorization system be understood by the widest (non-specialist) audience. Now my own perception may be colored by my native german, but I hadn't even encountered the name viol until the uploads from wima kep...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

And of course the German name is 'Gambe'. Then you get to the name of the player: If the player of a viol is a 'violist' (a term which Christopher Simpson uses) then you bump into the player of the modern 'viola'. Most people today call the viol player a 'gambist'. :o

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

I would certainly recommend using the name 'viol' in general. I was just suggesting that maybe the use of the instrument in French Baroque music is so distinct that the name 'viola da gamba' could be used for just that. I don't work with that repertoire so I wouldn't push that use at all. Incidental...

Re: Viol and viola da gamba categories

Here are some ideas: The official name of the instrument and the entire family is 'viola da gamba'. This distinguishes it from the entirely distinct family 'viola da braccia', from which the modern orchestral viola is a descendant. In modern terminology, 'viola' refers solely to the latter family. C...

There is nothing in my junk mail folder, so that's not it. The reply (to my normal email address) just never appeared. But thanks for the tip.
