Translation of the Week

I posted a first draft for a Translation of the Week project. The idea is to focus week by week on one of the most important/urgent translations at that moment in order to bring the various language versions up to date (or temporarily hide them if they are too outdated and nobody is translating them).

This is meant not as a replacement, but as a supplement to the ongoing internationalization project.

It would be important that those who work on the project pages contribute in determining over time which are the most urgent translations.

Comments? Ideas? Suggestions? Criticism?

Translation of the week sounds like an efficient way of going about the internationalization project. I think it should be mentioned somewhere to not use an online translator, since they are oftentimes wrong. I notice that it's neither mentioned in the internationalization project, nor the translation of the week project. There are some suggestions I have for the actual layout of the project page, too, but they aren't important enough to mention.

I don't think I've seen anyone doing that here so far (for the languages I understand), but it might nonetheless be good to mention somewhere.
There are some suggestions I have for the actual layout of the project page, too, but they aren't important enough to mention.
Then why did you mention it? :D Seriously though, I'm open to suggestions, no need to hold back.

I see you took the suggestion about the translators :)

I think the format of the project page should be changed to something like:

Description/goals
~~~~~~~~~~~

How to participate
~~~~~~~~~

I would change the section "others" (why isn't it just "other" ;) to be included in the "Description/goals sections", and "translators" to be put under "How to participate". I see that you have "How to participate" as large section all the info, but I think it would be more organized this way. Of course, I guess your top section does function as that.

As far as I know, there isn't a standard layout for projects... why not? While I guess it's true each project is different, I still think there could be some sort of standardized layout to make IMSLP look more uniform. Just a thought, I could be wrong.

Thanks for your comments. I see that the way I wrote the page, it doesn't convey exactly what I meant to express.

"Others" as in "Other people who are not translators". What I meant to express was that there are two important groups of contributors: a) translators (obviously), and b) people who are familiar with the English project pages. The latter need to tell us which are the most important pages, which pages have been changed significantly and hence need to be retranslated, etc. Maybe I should change "Others" to "Everyone else"?

Of course, I guess your top section does function as that.
I agree that we can expand the top section, but I would leave it without a section header. I think it is better to have an introductory paragraph before the table of contents and the first section header, much like the lead section of Wikipedia articles.

I guess we could look into that. If you want to, you could post a proposal. I think this can also be done later on after this project is launched.

Okay, I see what you meant now about "others". It's a little unclear, but I guess it works. In hindsight, I think suggesting to get rid of the introductory paragraph was a bad suggestion. I now agree that the project should be introduced first. But, I'm wonderful how well that will work for the purpose of standardization (for which I will draft a proposal). A really small thing: instead of "Current coordinator", it might be nice to have "Project leader" instead. Otherwise I think the page is well written. I'm sure others will have different opinions and criticism though....

I decided to launch the project. The first Translation of the Week is our Main Page. Every contribution is welcome, even if you translate just a single sentence.

Don't forget to give us input on what the next translations should be.

Obviously the project page can be improved as we go along.

I just wanted to drop by and say that I greatly support improving the current translations; I think translations are probably one of the least polished areas of IMSLP, and some of it is my fault (for not writing enough docs). If you need anything from me for this purpose, do ask.

Right now what we need is people taking part in this new project... maybe we should advertize it in the Main Page News section for a while?

Go right ahead. Many projects have been advertised in the News section; I don't see why this should not be as well.

The first week ends with three translations of the Main Page updated. Thanks to everyone who contributed so far.

The second TotW is "Copyright Made Simple". So far, no translations seem to exist. Let's see if we can get some more people interested in helping out.

Thanks a lot to Hobbypianist and Choralia for their continued contributions to the German and Italian translations!

The third TotW is the "Quick Guide to Score Submission", starting today.

We need to get more people interested for the other languages. Suggestions?
