Strauss Salome "Chorus"

Post by Contratrombone64 »

The full score of Richard Strauss' opera Salome is in question, well the main page actually (not the score per se). It states chorus - there is no chorus in this work.

Could the 5 Jews, 2 Nazarenes, and 2 soldiers be considered a chorus of sorts? Are they all solo roles?

Having coached singers in those roles, they are definitely more soloistic than choral.

Woops, maybe I shouldn't have been so fast to change it. For a start, I am going to move this to the categorization forum to see if anyone else feels strongly one way or the other, since the Score Requests forum is for requests for new scores.

Please post any further comments there.

No chorus in Karajan's 1978 Vienna recording, all the roles are taken by well known soloists. I agree they're definitely more soloistic in character too.

Here is another example with choir: http://www.amazon.de/Salome-Chor-U-Orch ... B00023PARI.
I´m not an expert for this question, may be both opinions are reasonable.

I'm wondering whether the mention of chorus & orchestra on the linked Reiner recording is more a routine blurb than an accurate description of the forces on that particular recording. I did read a description of a 1949 Met performance directed by Reiner, and neither cast list nor review mentioned anything about choral forces.
