Splitting the 4-act edition of "The Marriage"

Post by Lyle Neff »

Hello,

The opera Женитьба (The Marriage) is on IMSLP:

http://imslp.org/wiki/The_Marriage_(Mus ... Petrovich)

All the files for the 4-act edition are given on that work page.

Musorgsky composed only Act I, and Ippolitov-Ivanov composed the other three acts. Given that this situation is much more clear-cut than some other posthumous workings or reworkings (e.g., Prince Igor, the fully sung Carmen, etc.), and given that Ippolitov-Ivanov's contribution is much greater, I am proposing that only Act I of the 4-act edition be kept under "The Marriage (Mussorgsky, Modest Petrovich)," and that Acts II-IV be moved to a new work page "The Marriage (Ippolitov-Ivanov, Mikhail Mikhailovich), with mutually informational notes and links on both work pages.

I myself made a comparable separation when uploading the "B-la-f" quartet many weeks ago, making separate work page entries for Rimsky-Korsakov's, Liadov's, Borodin's, and Glazunov's movements. See this for an example of cross-linking:

I certainly see your point. However, I think it would be better yet to have the complete score (all 4 acts) listed under both composers (Mussorgsky and Ippolitov-Ivanov) instead of splitting it up into sections. Most people who might be interested in the score are going to look under Mussorgsky's name first. Having the whole thing there is easier than dowloading two separate files under two different composers.

The Belaieff collections are a bit of a different case, especially since there are some which involved a substantial list of composers. The Marriage is somewhat akin to Süssmayr's completion of the Mozart Requiem.
