Hello,

I have many original manuscripts and need some advice on the best way to post them. They are scanned now in 600 dpi RGB color. It's easy to go down from there. There seems there is an adversion to large files. Do I sacrafice quality? Do I need to worry about anybody hijacking my property? Do I need to watermark? What's the best way to handle originals? They are all on oversized sheets.

In case anybody is interested, I have pieces from Georges Gillet's library - romantic oboe and englich horn pieces. Guilhaud, Grandval, Vogt. I'd like to share them but don't want to disadvantage myself. I also don't see the point in sharing unless in high quality - there are important pencil marks, colored ink and other marks. Grayscale does not really work and compression kind of ruins the detail. I know nothing about the music but do want to share.

I'm not aware of any aversion to large file sizes from the standpoint of necessity. If these are manuscripts with markings in other colors, then color is preferred. And as to "property," are you claiming these to be your own? The best would be to upload one and we can take a look.

Only my own in that I posses the originals. I think they belong to everbody.

So, post a PDF? in 600 dpi and low compression? I have an orchestration of 100 pages.

If you can keep the individual PDF size down to 40MB, splitting up pages if necessary, that would be preferable I believe. Upload a sample, if not to the wiki then some 3rd party hosting site.

Ok - I just uploaded Verroust "Premier Solo". 3 pages and 50mb. What do you think? The other pieces have a lot more marking and personality. BTW, I know nothing about this piece. It could be a solo from something else. I can't be sure it is in the hand of Verroust... I really don't know. I could use some help to properly identify.

I actually added most of these Verroust pieces from the first editions, and what you have here seems to just be a copyist's manuscript with markings in someone else's hand. In any case, I've changed the colorspace to grayscale keeping the same sample rate and uploaded the results here: http://imslp.org/wiki/Premier_Solo_(Ver ... Stanislas)
As you can see, all detail is kept and the file size is dramatically smaller. If all scans/photos of these manuscripts are like this, then changing them to grayscale would undoubtedly be the best method.
