Hello,
I am planning to write an essay about art and music inspired by the feelings of exile. I think it is a pretty evocative concept, since exile means uprooting, being isolated from your own environment, your country, landscape, culture, etc.
I guess a good start point would be the Greek Homer's Odyssey. Ulises sailing all the Mediterranean in search of his home land, wife and son. Do you know of any composer inspired in that? or any relevant painter?
Many composers have worked in exile for political reasons. I guess Chopin would be one of the most representative. If I had to point out a piece, I would say etude op.10 num12, the "revolutionary".
A painter being oblidged of runing away from his homeland is Picasso, during the Spanish dictatorship.
Other composers have lived in exile as a sort of personal decision, I would say Gelnn Gould refusing to play in public would also be an example.
Another of my favourite examples is Rachmaninoff Op 32 num 10 in b minor, inspired by a painting by Bockling called "the exile".
I would like to ask the community for help. Any reference, or inspiration would be greatly wellcomed.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Exile
A few ideas(probably you already thought about them) : Bartók, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Martinů, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Hindemith. Does fleeing your homeland for fear of persecution count as exile? Probably some of those would fall into that category rather than forced exile.
There are some early ones like Johann Rosenmüller, Pandolfi Mealli, Stradella, Punto (born Stich) but I'm not sure that there would be much written about how their exile (if it could be classified as exile) affected their music. All the best! Interesting idea!....
There are also operas and melodrammas about Ariadne (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariadne). There's a list of them on that wikipedia article. This opera by Haydn is also about someone stranded on an island. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27isola_disabitata
Edit: an instrumental work inspired by Ariadne's story is this Concerto Grosso by Locatelli: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkH6MckST0c
