Emilie Mayer, Symphony No. 3

Post by azumbrunn »

There seem to be some errors as to the instruments involved in this work:

The instruments are listed on the work page as follows:

Orchestra: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons
2 horns, 2 trumpets (clarini), 2 trombones, 3 trombones
timpani, triangle, large drum, grand tamburo, cymbals, strings

In percussion I find parts for "timpani", "triangelo", "Gran (can't read this) e piatti" and finally a part by a different hand "Gran tambi e piatti". Those last two parts are identical and obviously for large drum and "piatti" (don't know the English word for them, in German "Becken"). There is no part for cymbals. And "large drum" and "grand tambour" are obviously the same thing.

Under misc. notes we find also this: "Die Stimmen für große Trommel und Becken "Grand Tambi e Piatti." (f. 248) sind Abschriften von fremder Hand." There is only one such part, not several as this wording (which is obviously quoted from somewhere) would suggest.

This should probably be corrected. Also: Where does the information come from that there is supposed to be cymbals in the orchestra?

Piatti is the Italian term for cymbals.

So cymbal and large drum are in the same part, presumably one of those large drums with cymbals mounted on top where the player pays the drum with one hand and the cymbal with the other, sounding like "Bong" and "Tsching" simultaneously?

Yes, the cymbals and bass drum are to be played by the same performer.
