Updating thumbnails

Hi, how does one update the thumbnail on an existing page? When I click on the thumbnail, and then click "upload a new version of this file" it goes to a page that says "upload picture" but the destination filename is a .pdf and when you try to submit, it doesn't allow because it's .pdf instead of .jpg. I can't change the name of the destination filename.
