Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?
Around 4 or 5 years ago a whole bunch of Shostakovich scores showed up on eBay. I managed to snag both full and PV scores of The Nose, among other goodies. I also got my 2-volume full score of Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet from a different eBay seller. Unfortunately, eBay has been devoid of similar treasures for some time.
My Shostakovich volumes were from the Soviet-era Shostakovich edition. I would have thought they would now be available in the more recent Russian Shostakovich edition (the one with hardbount blue covers).

I'm waiting for someone to perform Perotin on barrel organs.

DSCH Edition's New Collected Works must have it, but I'd probably have to go to Moscow to get it (I can't find a retailer who has it, and they don't have a website or anything).sbeckmesser wrote:I would have thought they would now be available in the more recent Russian Shostakovich edition (the one with hardbount blue covers).

Joseph Haydn- Symphony No. 76 in E-flat major: II. Adagio ma non troppo
Cologne Chamber Orchestra under Helmut Muller-Bruhl
Its simplicity is what makes this movement worth listening to.

Saint-Saëns: Carnaval des Animaux, with Dutoit leading the London Sinfonietta. Right now I'm up to No. 4 "Tortues". I think Saint-Saëns was very wrong in the assuption that it was a worthless piece. Surely not his best, but still brilliant.
I've always considered "The Philosopher" my favorite symphony of his. No. 19 or 22 I'm pretty sure.allegroamabile wrote:Joseph Haydn- Symphony No. 76 in E-flat major: II. Adagio ma non troppo

A good old favourite! Brings back memories of childhood piano lessons. This was the first complete sonata I learned to play, and I'm sure a lot of pianists had similar experiences in their learning days.Philidor wrote:Mozart piano sonata in C major, K. 545.

Mozart's 38th symphony, conducted by Karl Böhm - definitely one of my all-time favourite Mozart condudctors.
In a very different genre, I've just recently discovered Pierre Cochereau's interpretation of Bach's famous Toccata BWV 565.... Breathtaking

Chet Baker.
Before him, it was Sibelius's First Symphony.

Britten and Pears performing Schubert's Die Schone Mullerin. I actually really like Pears' singing, and Britten was a phenomenal pianist.
