Marking in Elgar Sym 1
In the full score at http://imslp.org/wiki/File:PMLP39959-El ... score).pdf there is a marking at the top of page 6 that looks like " L------------- A ------------- " (I tried to put a .png here to make it easier to understand but could not find out how to do this). There is a similar marking right at the end of the symphony, but with " R------------------ ". These marks appear on the flute stave at the top of the score, but also on the Violin 1 staff - so they probably apply to the whole orchestra, not to the individual instruments. Can anyone tell me what they mean? Many thanks for the collective wisdom available here.

Re: Marking in Elgar Sym 1
This is explained in a note to his 2nd symphony:
L - Largamente
A - Accelerando
R - Ritardando
My score of Symphony 2 has an instrumentation list with this note, but there isn't such a page in my Symphony 1 score, which is a bit odd.

Many thanks - I never would have guessed. Wonder why he didn't just use the (real) words - there is room, I think.
