I need ideas for a music lit. paper

The paper needs to be on how a composer, between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, used an instrument symbolically. I'd like to focus on a composers use of percussion in a piece, or throughout their career. I'm pretty stuck and would wanted to know if anyone else could help me.
