Can someone outline the basic steps I can use to search for MIDI files in the site? For example if I want anything for Violin that has an associated MIDI file, how would I come up with that list?

Make Google search with this:
violin "midi performance" site:imslp.org
The drawback is that you may obtain MIDI performances of the arrangement of a violin work for another instrument. Then say e.g.: violin "midi performance" -flute site:imslp.org
