Vyvyan Ayrs

David Michell's 2004 novel Cloud Atlas has a character named Vyvyan Ayrs. He is an old crippled nearly-blind composer, living in Belgium (near Bruges). Because Mitchell's thorough research on the realistic parts of his novel, and the fact that Vyvyan has dealings with other composers (e.g. Edward Elgar visits him), I was wondering whether or not Vyvyan is based on a real musician. Frederick Delius perhaps? Any thoughts?
