Selectively country blocking by IP address

Hey, this site describes how to use a free IP database (which lists ranges of all ISPs in the world) (together with ASP code) to determine country of origin of each request, and for non-US (or non-EU) items, we can block accordingly. The database is frequently updated.

would this be sufficient to safely block requests from US? we may need to discuss with the developers who developed the IMSLP file server.

You misunderstand. We've had many, many similar ideas....but proxy servers make it practically not worth our while...

Oh...... people can use proxy server to bypass our IP address check......
So is this our policy to block all entries that are not PD in USA or EU (i.e. a work must be PD in Canada, US and EU before it can be released)?
Then what is the difference between our policy and mutopia policy?

When there was a certain situation a few years ago, the other party suggested that it was possible for IMSLP to implement selective downloading, thus blocking certain countries by virtue of knowing the IP address of the downloader. But as Perlnerd points out, this technical issue is trivial to subvert, and indeed any attempt at enforcing a system would be worked around, somehow.
Anyway the policy currently is:
* for a file to be uploaded, it must be public domain in Canada, or have permission from the copyright holder – else it will be duly deleted by the Copyright Review team.
* for a file to be downloaded, it must pass a copyright review, and must also be public domain in the US.
IMSLP vs Mutopia

So if a work is PD in Canada and US, but *not* EU, will downloading be blocked?
And for long term, IMSLP will be like Mutopia, except IMSLP is for PDF entries, and Mutopia is for lilypond (re)typesets...............

EU is left to the user...
We are not Mutopia...
