I have browsed around the site for quite a bit, but not found anything on the subject, but when searching various newsfeeds on the 'net, it appears as some form for EU decision was made already back in September 2011 to extend the copyright protection for sound recordings to 70 years (it would, of course, still have to be incorporated with the national laws of each country).
Anyone having any updates on this issue, and what in fact has happened?

Yes, it was implemented on 1 November 2013 in the UK at least: http://www.ipo.gov.uk/directive201177eu.pdf
