I think you probably have Google Chrome set as the default browser, so you have to set the other one as your default browser.

In Windows Vista:
1. Right click on the Taskbar, select Properties
2. On Start Menu tab, select Start Menu and press Customize...
3. In Show on Start Menu section, check Internet link
4. Select your preferred web browser.
5. OK

In Windows XP:
1. Right click on the Taskbar, select Properties
2. On Start Menu tab, select Start Menu and press Customize...
3. In General Tab, check Internet
4. Select your preferred web browser.
5. OK

Dunno about other operating systems.

Absurd that selecting a default browser should be so complex and hidden, but there you are. There's a huge fight going on between IE, Chrome and Firefox and they make changing default browsers as difficult as possible.

Not sure what you mean, the 3 browsers you mentioned can easily be steered to become the default browser with about 3 clicks at most. All of these settings are available in the Options menus for each browser. Also, you may be interested to know that both Chrome and Firefox have add-ons/extensions that allow IE content to be rendered within the browser itself rather than opening an instance of Internet Exploder.
