Respighi: Preludio, Corale e Fuga

Post by Broeckie »

Just discovered this great work on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9lzK_b2RbE

The full score and parts should be PD. Who has a copy?

It is a very enticing piece! WorldCat gives only this entry, published by Ricordi in 1901 so yes, absolutely PD, though no known library posession: https://worldcat.org/title/725041710?oclcNum=725041710

I found nothing on the Italian library aggregators www.internetculturale.it and OPAC SBN.

Someone must have a copy, though.

Actually, since WorldCat listed the place published as Berlin, I looked in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and then the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek - and it looks like the Nationalbibliothek has it! https://d-nb.info/400578484

This library offers digitization services, i.e. it should be possible to pay to have them scan everything for you. It will likely cost you quite a bit since this is orchestral material and thus has many pages. https://www.dnb.de/DE/Benutzung/DoD/dig ... _node.html

Just the notice "Aufführungsmaterial (nur beim Verlag bestellbar)" which means "Performance material (can only be ordered with the publisher)" makes me a bit concerned, it might mean they'll decline digitizing it out of deference to the publisher, but hopefully they'll realize that there is no possible copyright remaining on this publication. I couldn't even find it on the Ricordi site, only on Nkoda, where they seem to be offering a set of manuscript parts anyway, which were indeed often photocopied and offered as publication in the 20th century, but not all the way back in 1901: https://www.nkoda.com/instrument?ref=0c ... 5b1076958d

I can upload it soon.

I have the manuscript score and parts, which have a © 1986 notice. This is probably nonsense related to a "limited publication" claim. The work is certainly PD-Canada and eligible for IMSLP, anyway. So I'll have it up soon.

Interesting, do you think the 1901 entry is a printed engraving, or a manuscript edition then? (The same as what you have?)

No idea. But also, your listing does not say anywhere that it was published in 1901. It is, I believe, saying it was composed in 1901.

I'm pretty sure the 1986 item is a copy of the 1901 score and parts. I'm also fairly confident this wasn't widely published before then, although it was definitely performed in 1901 (we even have a photo) and so it's PD-Canada.

I was wondering if there is a possibility to see Respighi's other J.S. Bach orchestral transcriptions?
The Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor P. 159 (after Bach's BWV 582) has been uploaded to imslp.org.

J.S. Bach / Ottorino Respighi : 3 Corali, Drei Choralvorspiele, P. 167 [G. Ricordi, 1957]
(arrangements for full orchestra from works of Bach : No 1 Nun komm' der Heiden Heiland BWV 659 / No 2 Meine Seele erhebt den Herren BWV 648 / No 3 Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV 645)

Another orchestral work by Ottorino Respighi that is amiss is the Burlesca Per orchestra P. 59 (M.p.O.), which he composed in 1906.
