Born 1899, died 1968, so still in copyright everywhere in the European Union. 1967 manuscript is at New York Public Library, but this is not the autograph; it was published apparently as Seress' "Gloomy Sunday" (the English translation) by Chappell in 1936 (unless this is a coincidence of names). Several libraries in the US, anyway, have copies of this Chappell (London) publication. The German version was also published in Berlin, in 1936 by Akla Musikverlag ("Einsamer Sonntag Zigeunerromanze und Lied" - copy at SB Berlin) (and again in 1950? - copy at Hannover.) There's also a 1952 publication by "Plessow Reibenstein & Co, Berlin" (I wonder if these republications nearby in date- 14 and 16 years rather than ca.28- would be taken as damaging the US copyright and making it PD in the US? But I don't know.)
