Searching the complete Handel files

Post by eNG1Ne »

I'm looking for Meine Seele hört im Sehen (HWV207), one of Handel's Nine German Arias. No sign in Band 50/51: Cantate a voce sola e basso, which is sad. Am I out of luck? should they be in the mysteriously unpublished Band 49?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

This is one of the 9 "Deutsche Arien" that apparently were never part of the original Handel Gesellschaft edition. Donald Burrows' 1994 Handel biography (p.428) cites an edition edited by "Roth" with dates of 1920 and 1931, long after the Gesellschaft was finished. One "Siegmund-Schultz" edited another edition of the Deutsche Arien dated 1981. These editions were probably the ones used in the various recordings of the pieces. Some or all of them might be in the public domain, but IMSLP doesn't have any of them yet. As of the date of Burrows book (1994), the pieces had not yet appeared in the new Handel Critical edition (the Hallische Handel Ausgabe, or HHA). When they do, that edition will be under copyright.

Thanks, Sixtus - now I know where not to look ... The Bärenreiter edition is out of print, and the copy in the Werner Wicking Archive doesn't include the figures for bass, so I had been hoping to find these pieces in the Gesellschaft edition.

Figures aren't always included in manuscript or printed Baroque bass lines. (See much of Bach's B-Minor Mass, for instance.)

I have just uploaded the score of "9 Deutsche Arien" in Roth´s Edition. The parts will follow in several weeks.
