Louis Vierne: String Quartet (Quatuor) Op. 12

Hi There,
I'm trying to track down a copy of this rarity - there are copies in the French National Library of both the manuscript and the edition published by A. Pérégally et Parvy between 1894-1898; I'd be happy with the published edition, if anyone has access to it?

Many thanks,
Daniel

You (or anyone watching) would probably have much better luck by locating a reprint of the first edition published by Eroica Music Reprints. A quick glance at the WorldCat shows there are a couple libraries in the US that have copies of this reprint (Yale, UC Santa Barbara). I'd love to see score (or parts) for this piece. And, as an open statement, if anyone is able to produce either said parts or score, I will gladly produce the other in a nicely-made typeset edition and make available to all.

They have, I think, a copy at my university (Cornell- I'm still an area resident, used to be a student, and then pt-time staff in a few dpts) library in parts. (Ah. Yep, I remember skimming it. Call no. ++ M452 .V66 op.12, parts . (1st edition, I'm pretty sure.) I haven't been there much lately. They do allow copying, or did awhile ago anyway, although it costs a certain amount per page. So I or presumably someone who's at the Cornell library more often could at some point copy, then later scan, the quartet...

Thanks guys - if anyone is able to garner a copy, I'm happy to pay reasonable costs for copying (up to $1 per page) if necessary. I, too, am interested in creating a new edition as it is out of print, and I specialise in this era of French music. Please PM me if you're interested/able. The Eroica catalogue doesn't have it currently listed as available for purchase, else I'd happily do that!

cheers,
Daniel

Daniel, just a note that I finally acquired a copy of the score, which looks to be a facsimile of manuscript (origin unknown). I was unable to find a set of parts and so I was thinking of creating a set of nicely typeset ones. If you'd rather I not steal your thunder feel free to let me know, but I'll be posting the score here soon.

There is a published score that was done by Jean-Pierre Mazeirat. It is a hand-drawn score, with the notation at the end: "partition reconstituée par Jean-Pierre Mazeirat." No date on the copy, but a catalogue reference from WorldCat indicates 1984.

Then that's probably the score I uploaded. I saw no mention of the copyist's name anywhere on the document.

If I can, I will try to photocopy and scan the local university's copy of the first (or early) edition parts one-these-days (if I can, if the photocopies fit in my scanner, etc.- but I haven't gotten to step one yet- sorry!), but logistics etc. mean that it will probably still be a bit...

Suspect this needs to start a new thread, but for all of those interested in Vierne, it would be great to have the marvellous piano quintet on IMSLP too. Clearly modelled on the Franck but packs an enormous punch. Recorded on Hyperion by Stephen Coombs and the Chilingirian quartet.

I agree and have heard it in an earlier recording, but as it was published with a copyright of 1924, I gather, it would be PD-CA and PD-EU I think but not PD-US (probably, anyway.) (Admittedly that's mostly a concern for people like me in the US...)

I will try my best to get hands on this piece.

While it would be good to have both, I'd prioritize the quintet forced a choice :) (indeed it's been awhile since I've heard it, too, and I should do so again.) Seem to recall it was inspired, like his violin sonata, by traumatic personal events, and for whatever reasons of motivation or whathave they're both excellent and powerful works...

Hi there! Any updates on the part creation process of this beautiful little string quartet?

I keep meaning to head over to campus, but I keep forgetting that I don't have to, I can put in an interloan request even from the local university up the way (though of course they can always say no...). And of course my scanner isn't -working- right now, but I could always try typesetting them :) Sorry about the delay!

For anyone who's still interested, I've uploaded the String Quartet parts to the work's page. Scanned by the BnF.

Best wishes,
Daniel
