I love this piece, which I believe is a much better work than, say, the 1st and 3rd Symphonies, not to mention the 1812 Overture. It can make an overwhelming impression in live performance, especially if the pipe organ at the end is both real (not electronic) and good, as it was in Boston's Symphony Hall with the Boston Symphony under Michael Tilson-Thomas when I first heard the piece. I recommend both his and Pletnev's recordings of Manfred.

I was thinking that at the end of the first movement it would be even more moving to add fireworks at the last chord of the of the movement. What do you think?

Only if they're physically attached to the conductors who take it upon themselves to add tam-tam/cymbal crashes there
