Sorry, that was a bit incomplete -- that orchestration is the Double Concerto. The Romance is 1/1/2/2 3/2/0/0 1, or 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 3 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, strings.

Hello,
just to let you know, my email in german got a swift response: Dr. Conradi will answer you soon, he just wanted to make some further inquiries: They don't have the double concerto in their archive, but possibly one of the member orchestras may have it...

Hi kalliwoda,

I was wondering whether you got any news on the score availability. I too am very interested in finding the score of Bruch double concerto.
Thank you very much.

I have been in contact with Dr. Conradi. Despite the fact that this piece has been played in recent years by the amateur orchestras belonging to his organization, the member orchestras that had parts are all missing some of them. Dr. Conradi has sent an email out to everyone asking for the missing ones, and will get back to me as soon as he can find something. He is hoping to eventually come up with a complete set.

He did ask me if I was interested even in an incomplete set. I said yes, because then my intention would be to try to source the score from the University of Cologne, and do a Finale typeset of whatever is still missing.

So we are moving, although a bit slowly. I suppose this is another argument for a website like IMSLP. Nothing can be irretrievably lost if there are virtual copies you can download from a website . . . .

I don't know if anyone is still following this thread and/or pursuing information on the Bruch Concerto for Clarinet & Viola, but I have some information that might help:

I am the Operations Manager of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. We have the Bruch Concerto for Clarinet & Viola, Op. 88 on the program of our November 7, 2009 concert (which will include Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on the second half of the program). Soloists will be Eli Eban, clarinet, and Csaba Erdelyi, viola.

I obtained the parts for performance in the U.S. through Boosey & Hawkes rental library. It is rental only and there is no other way to obtain a score or set of parts. Boosey shipped me the parts from their hire library in the U.S., but when I opened the package I discovered that all they had really done was forward a score and set of parts to me from Berlin.

The score and parts are marked as follows:
Misikverlage Benjamin
Leihbibliothek Hire Library
Lutzowufer 26
10787 Berlin

The cost, if anyone out there cares, to rent this for a single performance was c. $700.

It is scored for 2.3[1.2.Eh].2.2./4.2.0.0. tmp. strings.

I don't know if that helps anyone, but there you have it.

Steltz, do you have any news - just noticed that the entry of the Bruch at the BDLO library is back up, after it had been changed to only "rental info available" for a couple months.

By the way, to clarify the rental costs, at least in europe there is also a reduced rental rate for amateur ensembles. Usually rental rates are set according to performance time, I would expect a fee of less than 200 euro here in germany for an amateur ensemble, plus insured shipping.

The address on the hire material is no big surprise, since the Bruch was originally issued by Benjamin, which was later acquired by Boosey. The Lützowufer address is for Boosey&Hawkes - Bote&Bock GmbH and Musikverlage Benjamin, and the hire library was actually housed there, I think from about 1995 to 2004. Since Schott and Boosey started their strategic partnership, all german rentals from Boosey etc. are shipped from Schott in Mainz.

Hello everyone!

I'm a clarinetist from Cologne, Germany and I have edited the Peters edition, that has been mentioned in some of the posts above. It's a completely revised, Urtext-edition, using all the available sources including Bruch's original manuscript score.

Regarding the publication date, the Peters guys just told me, that the orchestral parts, as well as the new piano reduction wil be finally available in all countries (not only Europe) at the beginning of March 2010.
I know it's kind of annoying for all of us, that the version for clarinet, viola and orchestra will be available for rental only. But the good thing about it is, that my new edition wil be much (!) cheaper than the old reprinted Boosey & Hawkes version. Moreover, I still want to convince the responsible lector to print and sell a study score of the work...

In the meantime, you can check out my website for additional information on the new edition of op. 88 (sample pages, preface etc.). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,
Nicolai Pfeffer

When you say it will be available much cheaper, can you please tell us -- will it still be rental only, or will we be able to purchase parts?

I am still in the position of having students doing competitions where the orchestras will not rent music, so if we can buy parts, I will.

I have Oliver Seely's score, which needs corrections, but this came from Bruch's autograph manuscript. If I can't purchase parts, I will have to do parts from this.

If you should have trouble getting them to produce a study score, I expect it could be made available via Petrucci Library Press for a reasonable price - with the usual royalties (10% of retail) payable to Peters (plus that paid to this site for all PLP scores). The royalties would make the score somewhat more expense than a simple reprint, but not drastically so. A PLP score (a licensed reprint of your Peters full score in reduced format) would go into Amazon's vast network that way as well, which makes it fairly easy to obtain worldwide.

If you were to persuade those at Peters to permit a single movement of your newly-edited piano reduction to be posted here, we can insert deep-links directly to Sheet Music Plus. There's no reason publishers have to regard IMSLP as the enemy.

Hi!
@ steltz: At the moment, it looks as if the parts and the score will be rental material only. But I still try my very best to convince them to sell the edition. As I'm a clarinetist as well, I know how frustrating and stressful it is, to obtain the parts for this piece.
Maybe, if they see that many people are actually interested in performing the work, they'll consider to sell it. If you need the score and the parts now, Oliver Seely's transcription is definitely the best you can get. Although Oliver did a fantastic (!) job in transcribing the entire concerto, it contains hundreds of errors that you should try to correct before your (or your student's) performances.

@ carolus: That sounds really awesome. I'll call the lector today or tomorrow and ask him about this possibility. Let's see what he thinks about that - unfortunately he hasn't been very helpful/supportive during the last time... But: It's at least worth a try.
