Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940): Ocho por radio, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. For clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, percussion, 2 violins, cello, and contrabass (I think). Incredible music...combines various types of Mexican popular music with modernism. Revueltas was a really fabulous composer, and yet we don't have any of his music on IMSLP.... (of course, it would all be blocked from access anyway)

It is amazing how massively long Dvorak's early string quartets are, yet they maintain such a light and cheerful attitude.

The Finale of Korngold's brilliant "Die Tote Stadt" with the incomparable James King as Paul. He ranks up there along with Wunderlich as my favorite tenor.

Ligeti: Le Grand Macabre, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Fantastic work. My favorite contemporary opera (along with Glass's Akhnaten and Carter's What Next?; I despise Adams). I really love his music but the text is also great. Anyone able to see the NY Philharmonic's performance 2 weeks ago?

Would've loved to see that, too. Read it was pretty impressive. My favorite is when the metronome starts ticking away as the comet nears, but the car horns and doorbells are great too. Pretty neat stuff!

I'll have to check out Gawain, since I've liked what I've heard of Birtwistle. If only Takemitsu had started writing his opera!
