Recently Added?

Post by Craigbakalian »

Hi,

I am a living composer. I know that is a strange thing, but I am alive. I do post my work for free download on the IMSLP web site. However, when I post my stuff it is immediately blocked - this is understandable - for copyright issues. However, when I add a new piece, it never shows up on the "Recent Additions". Do I have to be apart of some elite club to get on the "Recent Additions", perhaps the dead composer club?

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question. But if, perish the thought, you make it onto "Recent Additions" I'll tweet you on the IMSLP Twitter account. In fact, hang on.... there!

I think this is an outcome of a complaint we had some months ago, whereby the Recently Added list was full of recent works that had not passed the copyright review – and so could not be downloaded. As a result the way the system now works is:

* once a piece is successfully uploaded and registered, it doesn’t go immediately into Recently Added (but it does appear in the copyright review system)
* a copyright reviewer comes along and assesses the work
* then the piece appears in Recently Added … provided the main page is prompted a bit, e.g. http://imslp.org/index.php?title=Main_Page&action=purge

I've kicked items 2 and 3 on the list into gear, so with a bit of luck your newly uploaded work is now displaying on the main page.

Cheers, Philip

Well, I suppose our friends over at a certain Viennese publisher we all know and love might 'know somebody who knows somebody' who can arrange for you to become a member of the elite dead composers' club. That will also make you eligible to vote multiple times per minute in Illinois elections.

An arrangement to be included in the "dead composer club" is something my wife is working on :P especially as we turn the soil in our garden beds - I think I twisted my spleen muscle while gardening yesterday. Ah, but voting in the USA - I look at my son and daughter with sadness, knowing that our system of representation does not work. But it works for rich people, so instead of being dead, I got to be rich!

Hi All,

I am still confused about IMSLP. On my composer page the two new works I just published are not listed when I am logged out, and listed when I am logged in. These works were displayed on the "Recent Additions" list. What is up with this?

Hi Craig, long may your wife be prevented from investing you into the "dead composer club"!

Almost certainly, something is caching old versions of the web page when you're logged out, rather than displaying the latest info: according to Feldmahler, anything that can possibly cached to save bandwidth, usually is, and so as I said above, sometimes the server has to be goaded to refresh. Being logged in may help that. By the way, your scores have already vanished onto the More Recent Additions... page as far as I can see.

(At present, there's a whole load of Lassus motets and madrigals on the front page, and little else.)

If you want some of your pieces to get considerably longer exposure on the Main page, then perhaps contact our friend Perlnerd who specialises in the Dish of the Day, uhh, I mean “Featured Scores”.

Cheers, PML

Pages for logged-out users are cached much more aggressively, because the sidebar and the heading always stay constant. To clear all of the page cache, just click the "refresh this list" link at the bottom of the recent additions list.

I used to have a script that will automatically refresh Main Pages every hour or so. Perhaps I should reinstall the script.

I still don't see my Piano Quartet and Trombone Ensemble pieces listed on my "Craig Bakalian" page when I am logged out. Regardless of whatever refresh option I do, internet browser or bathroom aerosol. Funny, I actually caught myself title paging the Piano Quartet as two violins, viola, cello and piano - instead of violin, viola, cello and piano. And, some invisible soul at IMSLP corrected my mistake in the piece description. I must say that the IMSLP staff are like little trolls that wiki-correct-stuff and leave a little history trail of "minor edits". I think I am too old for this wiki stuff, I am going to dig a hole in my back yard and plant another blueberry bush!
