Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
sigma: We could try you taking the oboe parts on flute for the slow movement. Michael Haydn does this in some of his Symphonies (e.g., Perger 29 in D major), and maybe Asplmayr did, too.
Philip: If you can get multiple people together to do one recording that would be great: if for example, you get two violinists, a bassoonist and a bassist together. Some people who would like to participate might not have the same scheduling difficulties and that is no reason to exclude them. But, to the extent that is practical in a chamber setting, please try to place them as they would be in an orchestra of Haydn's time: first violinists to the left of the conductor, second violinists to the right, etc.
The conductor on video idea is great. I will talk to a professor of conducting about it but he probably won't get back to me until next year. I could do it myself but I'm afraid I would be too Furtwänglerisch, or worse.

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
The recordings don't have to be MP3s but I worry they might be way too large to post on IMSLP as AIFFs or WAVs. What you could do if that is the case is to use a Web file storage service to send me the AIFFs or WAVs but post MP3s to IMSLP.
I read somewhere that at 256kbps MP3 is just as good as AIFF or WAV, and in my experience that seems to be true. Even Matesic's MP3 at 128kbps sounds very good to me.

I don't even know of anyone who could participate...

It's not 'just as good', though a large percentage of people can't hear the difference with what they use to listen to music.Alonso del Arte wrote: I read somewhere that at 256kbps MP3 is just as good as AIFF or WAV, and in my experience that seems to be true. However, a single instrument should compress pretty well losslessly unless it's recorded very loudly. There's no real reason FLAC shouldn't be the encouraged format.
Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
Hi, I play the bassoon if you are needing one.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Awesome. I'd love to.Alonso del Arte wrote:sigma: We could try you taking the oboe parts on flute for the slow movement. Michael Haydn does this in some of his Symphonies (e.g., Perger 29 in D major), and maybe Asplmayr did, too.

If you are looking for a conductor, look no further!
Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
Great project!
I would love to be involved too in case you can include another flutist. I play piccolo too, if its needed for a different piece.
Why don't we do something bigger (as well?), with a big symphony orchestra?
That way more musicians could participate.

Sounds great! I play trumpet, and also play bass guitar for the local community orchestra (working on learning the double bass).

Totally. But not only that, I think we should also try out a concert band.flute wrote: ...Why don't we do something bigger (as well?), with a big symphony orchestra?...
