Clementi, 3 Piano Sonatas Op.33 or 36?

Post by coulonnus »

http://imslp.org/wiki/3_Piano_Sonatas,_ ... ti,_Muzio) are the same as http://imslp.org/wiki/3_Piano_Sonatas,_ ... ti,_Muzio) and Op.36 is in fact http://imslp.org/wiki/6_Sonatinas,_Op.3 ... ti,_Muzio). The Piano Recording of Sonata Op.36 No.1 is in fact the Sonatina Op.36 No.1. What is it appropriate to do?

Clementi's Sonatas were published by different publishers all over europe with different opus numbers. Modern editions give the opus number, which the editor found in his source, so the mess has been transported in our time. There is a work catalogue by Alan Tyson (according to New Grove 1980 "Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Muzio Clementi, Tutzing 1967"). Perhaps this catalogue can be used to revise the list of works of Clementi.

Thanks. Hope the Tyson catalogue has excerpts or at least the keys. Note that the Litolff collection http://imslp.org/wiki/Collected_Piano_S ... ti,_Muzio) adheres to their Op.36-ness and has another set of 3 short Sonatas as Op.33 (F major, G major, A major). But the Guide Fayard de la musique de piano states Op.33 for these Sonatas (witout exerpts but with the right keys).

The Title "Thematic Catalogue . . ." suggests that there should be incipits of all compositions. Hope the best. This confusion seems to be normal in this time. Without incipits normally you'll have no chance to understand anything.

Here is the Tyson catalogue:

Hopefully it is thematic one, but it is clear that numbering confusion in the various editions is complete.
