I can still manually obtain a 400-dpi page with https e.g. https://gallica.bnf.fr//iiif/ark:/12148 ... native.jpg with any browser and save it but I can no more automate the process with lynx for the complete set of images. I am not aware of another browser which can be controlled with a batch program.

Use curl.
This command would download images 1 to 4 and save them as 001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc. in the specified directory.
