Are rentals doable?

Post by bicinium »

Hi all,

There's sheet music in the public domain which is only available for hire from a single publisher. Is it feasible to rent such material for the sole purpose of scanning it in before sending it back? I figure it would be painfully expensive and require one to tell sweet lies to the publisher in question...

No don't scan rented material and post it on here!! Most of the time, this can break a contract if you signed if you do this sort of thing. And I realize how frustrating it is to only find things that should be easily to buy commercially.

OK, noted, I guess I'll wait for them to stupidly put the whole thing on issuu.com then...

Sam is correct. Usually publishers make you sign a rental contract so even though there is no copyright issue involved you can get into trouble for breach of contract.
