Proofreading typeset harpsichord manuscript

Post by noktulo »

Hi there, I'm relatively new to typesetting but wanted to contribute to the Skywolf project so I typeset one of Benedetto Marcello's harpsichord sonatas. I wanted to see if anyone would be willing to proofread and make sure I didn't misinterpret anything. There were times I needed to cross-check between the two manuscripts to make sure I was reading it correctly.

The original manuscript used a lot of cross-staff beams and multiple voices for what look to me like simple chords. I preserved those but didn't know if it would be more modern to simplify and reduce crossing staves to a minimum. I'm also curious if soprano clef is common in modern harpsichord sheet music -- this swaps between bass, soprano, and treble clefs for the lower staff. I was thinking I might just reduce to bass and treble.

There was also a point where two right hand voices and one left hand voice are very close together on the lower staff and I was having a hard time typesetting it in a nice-looking way, so I resorted to an ottava bassa and keeping the right hand on the upper staff instead.

Would love any feedback in general! PDF link here

I am checking an arrangement of mine and I'll have a look afterwards.

I had a brief look. Before I do the entire proofreading, a few remarks:

4-line C clefs aka tenor clefs are uncommon for keyboard players.

Do no count a double bar other than at its usual position. e.g. end for line 2. Your bar nb 6 should be 5.
Also place the double bar at a line break.

When the source shows a 4th note in small print, do not represent it it with a small slanted 4th note which means an 8th note.

Can you send me a pdf by PM? The screen copies I made with your .pdf.html are not terrific.

I overcame the fuss of the Dropbox site and obtained the pdf. I'll start the proofreading :-)

Presto: meas. 19 r.h. 3rd beat: put the D sharp with an upper stem with the other ones.

Meas. 29 l.h. in ancient times you would put a whole note at the center of the measure. You have interpreted it as a half note on 3rd beat.

Meas. 48: r.h. misses a G sharp 8th note at the end.

meas. 49 end of 2nd beat, rh misses a low E 8th note.

meas. 52 4th beat rh misses a low E

meas. 53 54 rh misses a few 4th notes.

I'll continue if you accept my remarks.

next batch:

meas. 58, rh, 2nd beat: the 4th note E should be above the 8th rest.

Presto : remove the ||: which is implicit at the beginning.

meas. 11, lh, 1st beat: there should be 2 notes.

same till meas. 16
