100KB per page is great for 600dpi black/white monochrome CCITT4 images, but these are color scans of manuscripts, so 100KB for images of that nature would be quite low quality (unless their (dimension) size is tiny).

Out of curiousity, I checked the Violin 1 part from https://imslp.org/wiki/String_Quartet_N ... ,_Fidelis), and it contains 450DPI JPEG color images. Which in part explains the large size. Each image has quality level 98, and this is the main factor contributing to the large size. This is up to Cypressdome to decide, but if you lower the JPEG quality level a little bit from 98, this can dramatically lower the file size with mostly unnoticeable quality loss (to the human eye). As an example, if you change the quality level to 95 (from the original 98), the PDF size with the resulting images would be 60MB instead of 84MB. Considering a larger quality reduction to 75, the PDF size would then be 23MB. You might notice some unwanted artifacts in the images at quality 75, but this also depends on the original scan quality. In my opinion, the quality 75 images in this case look fine (barely any quality difference compared to 98), but comparing quality 80 to 98, I don't notice any difference even at a high zoom level.

The scores I'm uploading are edited with PhotoScapeX and convert to PDF with https://imslpforums.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 703#p51703, wich also compresses the files.

I was packing the jpgs into pdf files using the full resolution and same level of compression as found in the source images on the University of Pittsburgh's website. I will keep them at the same resolution but will start setting the compression to 85 to help reduce the file size. Since these are manuscripts I feel it is important to keep them as legible as possible for those interested in typesetting them. The finding aid with links to this collection can be found here. That would certainly be an important source for starting a project page.

I also use the 85% compression for my uploads, it's set by default in that web app. It's ok that they are in grayscale? I think that makes easier to read, all my uploads use grayscale and some other light and contrast adjustments.
