Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
I also think we should definitely have some trios, quartets, quintets, et cetera...

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
I've thought of other pieces for the IMSLP Orchestra, but first we should get one done, to work out the kinks and show it can be done. For a first piece I thought: it should not require a large, Mahlerian orchestra, but it should be somewhat bigger than an octet. Also, it should not be a piece that is frequently played by conventional orchestras, because then what is the point? I thought of Michael Haydn's Turkish March, but that is a band piece, not orchestral. So these lines of thought led me to Asplmayr.
Steve Jones has done an excellent job on the first violin part and he might also do the second violin and viola parts. So some progress has been made on the Asplmayr. Once this one is completed, I'll be happy to hear ideas as to what the next piece should be and disclose my own ideas about it.

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
I've started looking at the horn parts. In the third movement the horns have the section at the beginning (with the whole orchestra) repeated a few times throughout. The 2nd horn's section is different in two spots: after 'B' and at 'G' where it has a b instead of a g. Both notes are in the chord, but would have sounded very different on a natural horn: g is an open note and b would be muffled somewhat to bring the pitch down. I'm just curious if the b is a mistake or if it's intentional.
Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
I'd love to play clarinet in some future work if this works out...

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
In the third movement, I could have chosen to do "da capo al fine" and mark in a Fine. Either way, if I made mistakes in the first section, they would be repeated mechanically in the reprise. The mistake is most likely mine, since I am certain that Asplmayr himself would have known enough about natural horns not to make such a mistake. Both second horn in F and second horn in (presumably low) C may need to be corrected. I will have to get back to you on this tomorrow.

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
Horndude77 is right, the second horn at rehearsal letters B and G in the third movement is wrong for that one note that would not sound so good on the natural horn; it should read the same as at the beginning: D C G C, not D C B C. I will correct the affected horn parts next week at the latest, and the score next month.

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
I'm an oboist, and I'll try to put a recording up sometime during the next week.
I'm also a multiple woodwind specialist. If no one does bassoon, let me know, and I'll record it as well.

I look forward to hearing it once the copyright review goes through, Ron. Most musicians I've worked with are perfectionists, and it sounds like you're no exception.

Re: Proposal: The IMSLP Orchestra
It's really starting to come together now. Here is a very simple mix of Ronnal Ford's and Steve Jones's performance (no tweaking, this hasn't been in Pro Tools yet):

I think Ronnal did a great job, but if he nevertheless decides to record first oboe again, that is what I will use for the final mix once I have all the instruments.

This seems good! May I offer my rather young age for piano (decade) and trumpet (6 years, leisure). It doesn't seem like you have any trumpeters so far...Alonso del Arte wrote:It's really starting to come together now. I'd be willing to play cello for this
