Attributed composers - Do they own the copyright?

If a piece of music is "attributed" to a composer who is in the public domain in Australia as they they died before 1955, can we freely use their work?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated

Probably, unless you happen to know that the attributed composer is not the actual composer, but another person whose work is still protected.
